Thursday, 17Sept2026, Day 10, Alcanadre to Calahorra
My day began, after Morning Prayer, with the ‘breakfast of champions’, i.e., a neopolitana pastry and café con leche. Perhaps I may have formed an inordinate attachment to this particular pastry.
The 22K walk was much like yesterday’s, mostly flat and through agricultural areas primarily devoted to vineyards and olive groves. The olive trees are filled with fruit, but they won’t be ripe until at least November. Calahorra is a somewhat large city compared to many of the ones I’ve visited so far. The Cathedral of Santa Maria is beautiful inside. Especially moving is the chapel dedicated to the 4th century martyrs, Sts. Celedonius and Emeterius, two Roman legionnaires who converted to Christianity and were put to death in the city’s Roman forum. Today’s theme was seeking the gift of growing closer to Jesus, to understand his mission and become more intimately familiar with all that he is about. Can I begin to grasp the depth of God’s passionate love for me and for all humanity? How can my heart not be moved by the divine desire to communicate endlessly love and mercy, a desire so strong that God became human and shared time, space, joy, and suffering with us?
